Jul 1, 2015
fourth of july fireworks The fourth of July is around the corner! Celebrating Independence Day with friends and family usually includes outdoor activities such as: attending parades, hosting a barbeque, taking a dip in the lake or gazing at the pyrotechnics of a fireworks show. Being out on a beautiful summer day is certainly a treat, but staying safe during the hustle and bustle of celebration is an important precaution to take. Here are a few safety tips for your Independence Day festivities. Fun in the Sun
  • Sun Protection – Sunscreen, sunglasses and hats are three great ways to protect you and your family from the sun’s rays.
  • Stay Hydrated – Drink lots of fluids and snack on foods high in electrolytes to help you stay cool and hydrated throughout the day.
  • Find the Shade – Find a tree or sun umbrella to take a break under throughout the day to prevent heat exhaustion.
Water Sports
  • Wear your Life-jacket – when you’re on the water, be sure to wear your life-jacket.
  • Use the Buddy System – if you’re taking the family out to the beach, stay in pairs to prevent anyone getting separated from the group.
  • Stay Alert – observe safe boating speeds when you’re on the water. More boats means more people and traffic.
Fireworks Displays
  • Protect your Ears – fireworks can produce loud bangs and explosions, bring some ear plugs or ear muffs to protect you and your family from any ear damage.
  • Maintain a Safe Distance – be respectful of any zoned off areas surrounding a fireworks show. The closer you are, the more likely you are to be bothered by falling debris.
  • Pest Control – most fireworks displays start at dusk, a primetime for mosquitos and other pests. Bring along some bug spray to keep the bugs at bay so you can pay attention to the show, not to pesky insects.
  • Obey the Law – making your own fireworks show can be fun, but be sure to know the laws and regulations before planning your own display.
