Where It All Began

In 1998, Manhattan Toy introduced the very first Groovy Girls® doll series: Liza, Lucy, Lexi and Lupé. The soft doll collection was born with the intention of being a unique alternative to other fashion dolls in the market - inspiring friendship and celebrating individuality. Groovy Girls® quickly became a sensation; by 2000, they were a must-have toy at stores around the globe inspiring in-store parties and a whole lot of imaginative play.

The early 2000s brought major recognition, including “Girl Toy of the Year” and “Specialty Toy of the Year” from The Toy Association. Plus a spot on The Today Show’s “Top Toy Bargains Under $20.”

Over the years, the Groovy Girls® world continued to expand—from dolls and furniture to dress-up outfits, pets and creative DIY kits—capturing the hearts of kids everywhere.

A Pause… Not Goodbye

As trends in toys shifted, kids were moving toward other types of play (interactive toys, licensed characters, and alternative doll styles). Groovy Girls® gradually stepped out of the spotlight. By 2018, the collection had left the market.

But they were never forgotten!

One of the most magical things about Groovy Girls® is the fans and collectors that continue to share the joy. Across social media, a vibrant community of Groovy Girls® collectors is thriving—sharing, styling, and storytelling in ways that feel just as expressive and unique as the original dolls themselves. It’s a reminder that Groovy Girls® have always been more than toys!

And in recent years, these fans, parents, and our retailers kept asking the same question: “When are they coming back?!”

Why Now?

Fast forward to today, nostalgia is in full swing and adults that remember or were huge fans of Groovy Girls® are becoming Moms!  We are also seeing a shift to “back to basics” play resurging. Parents and gift givers are discovering the value of soft dolls, especially for children ages three and up to support emotional connection, creativity, and hands-on play.

The timing felt just right!

Let’s Get Groovy Again

So, the team got to work—blending fresh design trends, real consumer insights, and something extra special: the return of original Groovy Girls® designer Cathy Dalebroux.

Partnering with Creative Director Krista Clement, the duo reimagined the beloved line for a new generation—while keeping the heart and soul fans remember.

A New Era Begins!

The all-new Groovy Girls® doll collection made their debut in February 2026 at the International Toy Fair New York—and the reaction said it all: joy, excitement… even a few happy tears.

Coming May 2026

The new collection arrives in May 2026 at specialty retailers across the U.S. and Canada, as well as online at manhattantoy.com. Visit our store locator to find a Groovy Girls® retailer near you when you filter by Groovy Girls® dolls!
