Have you heard of the "Special Time" technique?

As a clinician working with families navigating behavioral challenges in children, I have seen the profound impact of a simple powerful technique known as Special Time. By setting aside dedicated, distraction-free moments where the child takes the lead, parents can strengthen trust, build emotional security, and foster a deep sense of belonging.

Special Time is a simple yet transformative way for parents to deepen their connection with their children. By setting aside dedicated, distraction-free time where the child takes the lead, parents can foster trust, emotional security, and a strong sense of belonging.

Here’s how to make the most of it:

1.     Make It Exclusive – Set a consistent time each day or a couple of times a week when your child has your full attention—no phones, no work, no interruptions. Just 10–15 minutes can make a meaningful impact.

2.     Let Your Child Lead – Allow them to choose the activity or toy. Whether it’s drawing, playing a game, or doll play, the key is to follow their lead without directing or correcting.

3.     Be Fully Present – Show enthusiasm and respond with warmth. The goal is to ensure they feel seen, heard, and valued.

4.     Resist Teaching or Correcting – Special Time is for bonding, not instruction. Avoid guiding their play or asking too many probing questions.

5.     End on a Positive Note – When time is up, gently acknowledge it and express appreciation for the moment: “I loved spending this time with you. I can’t wait for our next Special Time!”

By making Special Time a regular practice, parents create a foundation of trust and emotional connection, helping their children feel truly loved and secure. A small commitment with profound, lasting benefits.
